Session #1: Wikis, Blogs, Forums, Journals—Which One Do I Use & Why?

Learn to increase student and teacher communication in the e-learning environment through the use of wiki, blogs, forums and journals. Gain an understanding of which tool to select for the activity and the outcome that you desire. When the educator is well informed about the best use of each of the tools, usage increases and classes become learning centered, with the students being the driving force. This webinar is designed to assist educators as they try to determine which Blackboard tools will deliver the desired outcome in various teaching situations. The presentation shows actual populated Blackboard courses so that educators can see how students communicate in each of the mediums. Presenter: Katherine C. Riley, BS, Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes
Jewish College

Katherine Riley is an Instructional Technology Specialist for Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College in St. Louis, MO. She recently completed the Blackboard Certified Trainer Program; her final presentation was given on the Blackboard Learn Rubrics tool. Her
responsibilities include faculty and student Blackboard support, course design, BLS instruction and certification of students and faculty, response device inventory, training and management, and support for all other technology used to implement technologically enhanced learning. Katherine has a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University and has been with the College for two years.

Session #5: Why and How to Best Use Rubrics in Blackboard Learn 9.1

Time & Date: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm ET, Tuesday, July 24, 2012
Learn the benefits of using Blackboard Learn’s interactive Rubrics. This presentation will explore the pros and cons of using Rubrics, how Rubrics employ Chickering and Gamson’s Seven Principles of Good Teaching Practice, and how the use of Rubrics will benefit your students. In addition, you will learn how to create, edit and apply a Rubric and how to grade with a Rubric. The audience will take away a firm grasp of how and why Rubrics are an effective teaching tool – and an enthusiasm for using Rubrics in their classes. In addition, they will be given a handout that covers in more detail how to create, copy and edit a Rubric, how to use Rubrics with Assignments, Tests, Discussion Boards (Forums and Threads), Journals, Wikis, Blogs and Grade Center Columns as well as how to grade all of these activities using a Rubric. The audience will also take away knowledge of how students use and can benefit from the use of the Rubrics tool. The pros and cons of using Rubrics will be explored as well as how the use of Rubrics encourages contact between students and faculty.
Presenter: Katherine Dowdell, Des Moines Area Community College
Katherine Dowdell earned her MS degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.  She began teaching psychology at Des Moines Area Community College in 1995 and currently serves as the District Chair for Social and Behavioral Sciences.  She has been teaching hybrid and online courses for 7 years. Katherine has become very interested in the pedagogy of online teaching and in creating media supplements, such as interactive exercises, virtual field trips and tutorial videos.



Session #6: What is my Role in the Online Classroom?  Ways to Engage and Interact with Your Online Students

As an instructor, one of the biggest challenges in the online classroom is to keep your students engaged and motivated. This session will focus on your role as the instructor and the teaching techniques that will stimulate a student’s curiosity and encourage active learning. In addition, there will be discussion surrounding the methods on how to encourage active participation and peer-to-peer learning, which can further impact the overall learning experience and generate successful outcomes.
Presenter: Brian Morgan, Marshall University
Brian Morgan is currently an assistant professor in the Integrated Science and Technology Department at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Brian, a native of Chesapeake, Ohio, is the program coordinator for the Computer and Information Technology major, advising 60+ students each year on education and IT career choices. Brian teaches computer programming, database management, GIS, and e-commerce courses both in the traditional classroom and as courses that are delivered 100% electronically. He is also a Blackboard Dr. C.

She has being teaching online since 2000 and has taught hundreds of prospective instructors the art of teaching online.  She has an MSEd from Newman University with concentration in Adult Education/Distance Learning.  She is certified as both Online Instructor
and Online Course Developer by Walden Institute.  She has been serving as a Blackboard “Dr. C” since 2010.

Session #3: Tips and Tricks for Utilizing Video and Media in Your Course

Even the most experienced online instructors can get into a “rut.” Participants in this session will see examples of the tools, and techniques that an experienced online instructor used with great success to raise interactivity and learning in an online course by adding video and media.  An online course site with the session content will be available after the session.

Presenter: Paige Brook – Jeffiers, Kentucky Community and Technical College System
Paige Brook - Jeffiers is the eLearning Technology Coordinator for KCTCS (Kentucky Community and Technical College System). She trains and supports faculty on how to create quality content and implement it through the course management syste. Paige has held this position since its inception in 2000. During her 10+ years, she has trained on six different
CMSs including WebCT, Angel and currently Blackboard.  She provides training to KCTCS faculty in both face2face and virtual environments. She has also provided training to admins and faculty of other institutions in the state. In addition to training faculty, she also teaches web design and production for a local community college which was awarded the Blackboard Exemplary Course Award in 2011.

Session #2: Real Examples for Using Adaptive Release

But by using adaptive release for feedback and navigation of the course, students are given a better course experience and often have fewer questions. Presenter: Deborah Prickett, Jackson State University
Deborah Prickett has been teaching English classes through the use of technology at Jacksonville State University for eighteen years. She teaches online, hybrid, and traditional classes, ranging from Freshman Composition and American Literature to Communication Theory.  She serves as Chair of the Freshman Writing Committee. In addition, she serves as a technology liaison for the English Department. She has implemented all of the Communication Blackboard tools in her various classes, and offers suggestions to help others decide how and why to use these various tools.
